Dr. Nancy Wayne was honored with the 2007 Distinguished Marine Neuroscience Lecture at the University of Miami. Dr. Wayne's research examines cellular and molecular mechanisms by which neuroendocrine cells regulate changes in neuropeptide synthesis and secretion. The model system that she uses is the neuroendocrine bag-cells of the marine mollusk Aplysia.
Dr. Ernie Wright, Professor in the MCIP program, hs been elected to the German Academy of Science Leopoldina [Deutsche Akademie der Naturforschere Leopoldina]. The Leopoldina is the world's oldest academy involved in the natural sciences that has been permanently in existence since it was founded in 1652 as the Academia Naturae Curiosoriumin the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. It was officially recognized by Emperor LEOPOLD I in 1677 and vested with the privileges of an Imperial Academy in 1687. The number of members below the age of 75 is formally limited to 1,000. Three quarters of the members come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the remainder comes from more than 30 other countries. Currently there are 34 Nobel Prize winners and in total there have been 163 members awarded this honor. There are 28 sections of the Leopoldina ranging from Mathematics to Medicine.
Dr. Wright has been previously recognized by election to Honorary Membership in the (British) Physiology Society in July 2006.
Dr. Art Arnold has recently been elected Secretary of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) (http://www.ossdweb.org) Dr. Arnold's research is directed toward understanding the biological origins of sex differences, especially in the brain.
Dr. Linda Cai, a Professor in the MCIP program, has recently been elected to the editorial boards of the "American Journal of Physiology, Heart and Circulatory Physiology" and the "Open Endocrinology Journal." Dr. Cai is a cardiovascular pathophysiologist whose research focuses on nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species signaling in models of hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetic vascular diseases and therapeutic angiogenesis.
