MCIP PROGRAM RETREAT TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 28, 2009

Please save Saturday, February 28th for the 5th Annual MCIP Retreat. This year we will again emphasize presentations by our students and new faculty in the program, along with time for relaxed conversations with our friends and colleagues. Applicants to our program for the 2009-2010 academic year will also attend as part of their interview process.

The retreat this year will be at the historic and beautiful Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, about 37 miles from UCLA, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. The Santa Anita Park is an art deco edifice that opened in 1934 and has been the site of landmark equestrian, cinematic and athletic events. Equine stars include Seabiscuit, who won his last race at Santa Anita. Human stars include the Marx Brothers; Santa Anita Park was used for filming of “A Day at the Races.” More recently, Santa Anita Park was the site for equestrian events for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, filming for the movie “Seabiscuit” and it will be the site of the 2009 Breeders Cup.

Santa Anita recently underwent extensive renovation that maintained its early art deco style, but it is now well-equipped to host conferences and retreats. We will be able to take advantage of this beautiful facility in a park-like setting at this year’s MCIP retreat, which will include a track-side continental breakfast while trainers work with their horses in preparation of the afternoon races, lunch on a patio overlooking the park and then an elegant dinner in the Director’s Room with carved walls designed by English architect William Kent in 1740.

STUDENT SEMINARS - ACADEMIC YEAR 2009/2010

Ph.D. students in the MCIP program participate in monthly research seminars where students present their ongoing work to MCIP faculty, students and other friends and colleagues. The seminars provide a forum at which students can hone their presentation skills, receive feedback and constructive suggestions, and identify shared scientific interests with their colleagues in the MCIP program.

Lunch is provided! Please join us!

All seminars are held at noon in Room 2320, Life Science Building.
